HKICON CONSERVATION AWARDS 2026
ABOUT THE AWARDS
Launched in 2018, the Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists (HKICON) Conservation Awards are awards dedicated to the recognition of professionals in the field of architectural conservation. The awards recognise architectural conservationists for achieving excellence in conservation projects in Hong Kong. This year, the HKICON Conservation Awards is pleased to allow a wider spectrum of conservation projects in the three revamped award categories.
AWARD Categories
Repair, Maintenance & Restoration Category
This category recognises conservation projects that safeguard the cultural significance of heritage places through appropriate care, repair, maintenance, stabilisation or restoration. Conservation interventions in this category help to prevent deterioration and address potential problems in a timely manner. It might also involve restoration of a site to its earlier state under sufficient evidence. Projects in this category should demonstrate respect for authentic historic fabric, careful documentation, appropriate use of traditional or compatible techniques, and a commitment to preserving the values, craftsmanship and physical evidence embodied in the heritage place.
Projects in Hong Kong and overseas completed by HKICON fellows, professional members, associate members, and corporate members are eligible.
Adaptation and Transformation Category
This category recognises projects that give new or continued life to heritage places through sensitive adaptation, compatible new uses or meticulously considered interventions. Conservation interventions in this category could include adaptation, accommodation of new use, new addition(s), alteration, partial retention, relocation or even reconstruction. Projects in this category should demonstrate how conservation supports sustainable use while retaining the character, fabric, setting and cultural significance of the heritage place. Projects shall also demonstrate the interventions respect cultural significance and are only pursued after careful consideration of alternatives. In case of relocation, the project submission must demonstrate that the means is the last resort of heritage survival. In case of reconstruction, the project shall only be considered appropriate if the project demonstrates that it is the only exceptional measure possibly undertaken in special circumstances, and the project must demonstrate that it is supported by direct evidence to reproduce an earlier state.
Projects in Hong Kong and overseas completed by HKICON fellows, professional members, associate members, and corporate members are eligible.
Heritage Interpretation Category
This category recognises projects that enhance public understanding, appreciation and engagement with the cultural significance of heritage places. Heritage values are not always immediately visible or easily understood, and interpretation plays a vital role in communicating these meanings to different audiences. Good interpretation practice should be culturally appropriate, evidence-based and sensitive to the place, its communities and its living traditions. Projects in this category may include exhibitions, guided experiences, digital tools, educational programmes, research-based storytelling, community engagement or other interpretive initiatives that reveal the significance of a heritage place and foster deeper connections between people, heritage and place.
Projects in Hong Kong completed by HKICON members and non-members are eligible.
